Is my water dragon a male or a female??

Sexing of your dragon can be difficult. You probably won't be able to tell if your dragon is male or female until the age of 18 months-24 months, which is approx 1.5 years to 2 years of age. The male and female dragon will look exactly alike until 18-24 months. This is the age when the begin to sexually mature. The only other way to tell if a dragon is male or female before they sexually mature is to get them probed. You should only get this done if it is a necessisty. Probing should only be done by an expiernened vet as it can harm the dragon if not done correctly.

Male Charecteristics

At around 18 months, the male will become to take on definate changes. The crest will become much larger with very large spikes. They will also have a "second crest," along the tail. Their spikes along their back will also begin to lengthen. Their jowls also become bigger and more noticable. Their heads are usually triangular shaped and larger compared to the female. The also have femoral pores on the underside of their thigh, which look waxy in nature. They will also have two bumps underneath their vent. Both males and females have 2 bumps above the vent, but the male and the male only, will have also have 2 bumps under the vent (which is underneath the tail.) They will grow to the length of about 3 feet if healthy throughout their growing years.

Female Charecteristics
The female really doesn't change much as they sexually mature. So for a female, you really won't see any change except for growth in length. A female has a more oval shaped body. Their crest's, head, and spikes are smaller and they do not get the large spikes on the tail. They only grow to about 2 feet. They will only have one bump under the vent or no visable bump at all. Their femoral pores will may not be visable at all. If they are visable, they will be very small, and barely noticable.
An important note about females!! Females will lay eggs yearly after they mature even without a male.  Check out the Breeding page for more information on what you need to do for a gravid female.
